Peace accord ending all hostilities in Benue signed by the
feuding Benue farmers and leaders of MACBAN, the umbrella body of Fulani
herdsmen. Dr. Orhii stated this in an interview on Monday with Makurdi newsmen in the state capital of Benue, after the relief materials were donated to the victims of crisis at various Makurdi and Guma camps and local government area.
The truce was discussed by mediators at the end of the meeting of the DIG, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mike Zuokumor with his team, the Chairman Benue State Reconciliatory and Peace Building Committee, led by General Atom Kpera along with members of the committee, and the National President of MACBAN, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Alhaji Bello Modejo with his team. The meeting was held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House.
General Kpera announced the resolution of the meeting with Alhaji Modejo, claiming that the Tiv/Agatu and Fulani agreed to cease any hostilities and to set up a task force to implement the new peace agreement.
They all vowed to find all the criminal elements responsible for fuelling the dispute to tackle the current crisis.
”We also agreed that the Fulani have not been chased out of Benue; they should feel free to remain and co-exist peacefully with Tiv/Agatu rural farmers.
”We have agreed to meet from time to time to build confidence and keep track of the implementation of the peace agreement.”
Both feuding parties were urged against taking the laws into their hands and were asked to restrain from harassing any individuals.
